Our Staff

The D. E. Shaw group has made a conscious effort to build a relatively small team of extraordinarily gifted professionals, each among the very best in his or her profession, ranging from theoretical physics to literature. The firm attempts to foster a culture of intellectual rigor coupled with financial pragmatism.

In our experience, extraordinary people are more likely to produce extraordinary ideas. For this reason, we put tremendous emphasis on finding and hiring people whose creativity and insight could help transform some part of our organization.

Current employees include a recent U.S. Women’s Chess Champion, a member of the famed MIT Blackjack team, a Jeopardy! winner, a former World Foosball Champion, a Bridge Bronze Life Master, and winners of more than 20 International Math Olympiad medals. We also have on our staff a number of professional athletes and musicians, former professors, Marshall scholars, Fulbright scholars, and Putnam fellows. Approximately thirty of our employees are entrepreneurs, having founded their own companies, fifty have a PhD, and more than one hundred than twenty percent are published authors in genres ranging from academic papers to mystery novels.
