What We Do

The D. E. Shaw group holds that financial markets behave inefficiently, sometimes in quite subtle respects, and that certain of these inefficiencies may be identified through the careful application of sophisticated quantitative analysis, advanced technology, and the insight of extremely talented human practitioners. The firm has managed a global suite of investment strategies for over sixteen years, and is currently building a world-class institutional asset management business, which will benefit from, and strategically complement, the D. E. Shaw group’s existing investment activities.

In addition to its activities in investment management, the firm also seeks to make selected venture investments within industries that it believes are likely to be fundamentally transformed by the use of technology. These transactions have ranged from purely passive investments in existing ventures managed by outside entrepreneurs to start-up firms that were organized by and “incubated” within the D. E. Shaw organization.
